COC 2014 2nd Runway Challenge

COC THOM BROWNE Invitation

THOM BROWNE STYLE CHALLENGE

This the second in a series of runway challenges which test the mix and match styling capabilities of our contestants to bring their unique skills to be measured based upon a theme from the fashion world outside of Second Life.

For this challenge the finalists showcased “THOM BROWNE, Elizabethan era in a mixture of insanity and baroque, meticulously staged in a theatrical manner.”

A little background about Thom Browne;

When Thom Browne came up with this Elizabethan Theme “Clown” he proclaimed to have never seen a clown, he imagined what one would actually looked like on the runway and used his insane way of thinking to bring the clowns to life.

Browne’s workmanship and techniques are formidable; has its own dimensional textures and architecture. Needless to say “These complex, haute couture–minded ensembles remain enigmatic, and posit the question: Where oh where is she hobbling to, all dolled up and furbelowed like this? {by Hamish Bowles}

EARTH HOUR/COSMO COUTURE CHALLENGE
Finalists were asked to Mix and Match and create a unique COSMO COUTURE inspired outfit. Cosmo Couture fosters a direct collaboration between Architecture,Interior and Fashion Design to create garments reflecting a given theme and today our candidates have been asked to incorporate the elements of EARTH HOUR

====================
ABOUT THE EARTH HOUR
====================

Hundreds of millions of people, businesses and governments around the world unite each year to support the largest environmental event in history – Earth Hour.

More than 7,000 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories switched off their lights for Earth Hour 2012, sending a powerful message for action to save the planet. This year, more than 200,000 individuals accepting I Will If You Will challenges on YouTube to turn their symbolic action for the planet into an ongoing commitment to a sustainable future.

Earth Hour is organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). With almost 5 million supporters and a global network in over 100 countries/territories, it’s one of the world’s largest and most respected independent conservation organisations. WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the Earth’s natural environment and build a future where people live in harmony with nature.

The models were given this link to offer insight into the COSMO COUTURE styling www.corcoran.org/announcements/cosmo-couture-2012

INSPIRATION:
The challenge for the Earth Hour/Cosmos Couture was enlightening, interesting and fun, and for this challenge, I used nature and textures. My inspiration for this challenge consisted of the rare if hardly seen blue leaves of the hosta plant, the blue gum trees, blue ash and Colorado blue spruce trees. In western N. Carolina, there are blue ghost fireflies to add to the mix, not to mention the iridescent blue ground beetle for the added flair on the peplum. The skirt is a beautiful rain forest waterfall texture borrowed from wallpaper, the blue & green colors represent the earth and my inspiration was the rain forest, which represents the lungs of the earth-one of mother natures greatest gifts to mankind. The earrings represent the coral of the sea, which provide home for 25% of all marine species.
These rare things represent the damage that we have done to our planet, because in the rain forest and other beautiful parts of the world, there is a devastating impact of climate change, and other environments worldwide that only we can fix if we all want to take the time to do so, which part of this is what the Earth Hour means.
The Cosmos Couture challenge consists of design elements such as forms, color, textures, scales that come into play when one designs a wearable item. Its a great opportunity to explore these new resources and materials used in the natural environment and to find ways to apply them to Haute Couture fashion and creating a bridge between fashion, nature and architecture‎.
Earth Hour is an annual event meant to raise awareness about climate change and the environment. This encourages individuals and organizations around the world to turn off all of their non essential lights for one hour.
It was my personal pleasure to add all these elements together in order to create this outfit, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Thank you!

If we each make small changes we give a chance for Nature to breathe and begin to recover. I wanted to show Nature and the Earth symbolised in the butterflies, flying free and multiplying, beginning to cover the black ironwork. For me they are a symbol of delicate hope, fighting back against the impact of man’s industy, given the chance because of all our efforts to make changes in our impact on our Planet.

Flidais Etchegaray “Fly”

CoC Cosmo Couture Challenge (Full)

With this styling I tried to blend organic elements of the Earth with both cosmic and spiritual elements. I wanted my outfit to reflect the fantastic mysteries of the Universe and where we Earthlings fit into the grand scheme of things. I styled myself as a mystical goddess, balancing the Earth effortlessly on my crown as I dance through the galaxy. We see this dance of the Goddess in all things, cycles, and seasons, and the more in tune we are to these cosmic patterns, the better off our planet and all of its inhabitants will be.

Hello ladies and gentlemen my name is Frayar Resident and I hail from the good ole USA. The land where diversity thrives in it’s different people, music and styles.

My Earth Hour Style was inspired by the ethereal look of the earth from the stars. My gown represents the various shades of blues, whites and browns carved through the earth bringing with it life. The green leafs are the green you see and represents the trees. My hair is the yellow of the sun, the warming balanced needed to sustain all life. It hangs between the moon and the stars as shown with my earrings.

I believe the most important part of the earth’s care is us, with the intelligence to understand it’s flow and the ability to harness it naturally for all life. I hope you enjoyed my styling, but hope most of all you love this earth to life.

Kestrel Sorrowsong “Kes”

COC-Earthhour

The challenge is to represent the relationship between the built environment and the Earth through second life fashion. To do so I have chosen to represent Kestrel as Yemaja, the Yoruba spirit guardian of the oceans and protector of the Earth’s children. Kestrel, wearing Finesmith’s Diali dress in Circulate, is draped in the colors if the earth and sea. She wears Finesmith’s Dola tiara in silver and blue gemstone the colors of Yemaja. These colors are also seen in her makeup: Madrid Solo’s Melancholy lipstick and eye shadow.
I chose Finesmith’s Shape of My Heart wings for this styling to represent modern steel structures, technological masterpieces of the built environment. Some might consider the Earth and the built environment to be antithetical, but in my styling, Yemaja is not burdened by the weight of the steel. They wings lift her and give her strength from the good technology has to offer to heal the Earth and make it a better place for all.

So many people abuse Earth. Wanting a way to inspire individuals to preserve our planet, Sarah decided that the best way to do this was to go back to a basic rule that is used when trying to change peoples mindsets: Become a role model. When Sarah is passionate about something, she comes up with the idea that can’t be ignored. So for this endeavor, she choose to make a outfit that looks like a budding flower. But the best part of this outfit, is this it’s made with recyclable fabric and bamboo for the 3d flowers on it. Of course her makeup and accessories are all eco friendly.

Colour of Couture - Earth Hour / Cosmo Couture Runway Challenge

I thought the symbol of the earth where we live is “water”.
So I tried to express water that circulates the earth.
No creature with life can survive without water.
A drop of water that falls from the petal of an orchid flower gathers to form a small stream,
and it will eventually merge with a bigger stream and will then vaporize only to return to another petal.
I appreciate that we are given lives in this cycle of water, irrespective of whether we are organic or inorganic.

My styling was inspired by the industrial/interior design component that is the hallmark of cosmo couture. I employed the Earth Hour colors of green and blue as often as possible, but I included some other colors as well to serve as representations of the variety of colors present in our world. My accent pieces are bits of a crashed satellite, which I found fitting in that satellites orbit Earth to monitor it and study it in a variety of ways.

Tiviyah “Tivi”

CoC Earth Hour Challenge - Tiviyah Resident

When Tivi thinks about the Earth, she tries to think positive. There are so many negative things on the planet right now, and many negative things happening to it… but instead, she tries to focus on the positive… the life that is still thriving within our still-beautiful planet.

It was then that she set out to try and create a ‘living garden/rainforest’ idea in a dress. With her unashamed obsession with shows like Project Runway, she considered the ‘cosmo couture’ element of this challenge to be a bit like an “unconventional materials challenge’ and so the base mesh dress and gloves she chose were perfect, looking almost like re-purposed, re-structured plastic, and just enough of an oddity to make you tip your head and look twice.

The birds and butterflies flying free on the tails of the skirt train, as well as the flowers resting on the gown were meant to symbolize a bit of ‘home’, the Hawaiian Islands, where her father’s side of the family grew up. Hawaii, and its other islands, are a constant reminder to Tivi that no matter how ugly the world can seem in the metropolitan city-scapes wracked with pollution, there is still beauty somewhere, in the quiet serenity of a peaceful island.

Vera based her styling on the beauty that encompasses the basic home interior items, and decorations. Her head and neck-piece are designed using different cuts of mirror that once dawned the walls of a luxurious home. Her gown is compiled of a colorful variety of window coverings, draping her lightly colored legs. She has fashioned a beautiful flowing skirt out of leaves from a plant that was meant for an interior walkway. The soft blossoms add color to her her mirrored crown. She has decided to allow the butterflies to inspect this fabulous faux flower creation, delicately accented with a touch of color from her favorite make up artists in Second Life. Her amazing design was created using the designs from Alyce, Damned, Desir, Finesmith, Loovus Dzevavor, Madrid Solo, Mea Culpa, Mes Petites Coutures, Moondance, Nuuna, Gizza, and Vita’s Boudoir.

Zoomy Bluebird “Zoomy”

COC Earth Hour Challenge

My lives, First and Second, has been quite an adventure so far, to say the least. They both bring the unexpected and are constant reminders that I, even at my age, don’t know everything. Earth Hour, is one. Until Colour of Couture presented this challenge to us, I had never heard of this worldwide event where millions switch off unessential lights for one hour raising awareness for the planet.

Merging both my lives, I’m styled with the things I will surround myself with during my first Earth Hour with me being the centerpiece — the one who brings and *keeps* everything together.

For 60 minutes or 3, 600 seconds, I, along with my family, will dim our lights in observance. In the timespan it takes for a heart to beat 4, 320 times and 15, 060 babies to be born, I will sit at my table by candlelight, sip my favorite wine, read my favorite magazines and play cards reminding my family exactly why it is they have dubbed me the “Empress of Gin Rummy.”

Thank you once again, Colour of Couture, for bringing something new to my lives.

Cymande Haalan “Cymande”

2014 COC - Cymande Haalan

INSPIRATION: The challenge was from the Martin Margiela Spring 2014 collection, and I loved the fun colors, brightness of the patterns and textures.. This styling reminded me of the funky clothes that were worn in the 70’s! I loved them and I put together what i felt represented that. It was a fun tme to wear whatever your spirit wanted, testing your fashion limits-just being free with a slight edge.

For something different: I had to put velvet in the mix, largely because the 70’s had so much of that texture for the pants and tube top, not to mention the belly chain. I loved the jacket, with the different patterns as Martin Margiela had funky colors that made everything come alive, along with different mixtures of lengths in his design elements, I felt like a walking piece of abstract art, ready to hit the discos.

ElaraGloriana Scrabblebat “ElaraGloriana”

Colour of Couture 2014 - 1st Photo Challenge

I am proud to be representing my Lumbee heritage as a 2014 Colour of Couture Top Model Competition finalist. For our first photo challenge the finalists asked to interpret a look based on Maison Martin Margiela’s 2014 Spring Collection. (If you are interested, you can see our inspiration images here: http://www.arcstreet.com/article-maison-martin-margiela-paris-ha… ). What struck me about the collection’s mixing and matching of textures and cuts was how easily it all blended with one another. What may have been very visually jarring to audiences in art and fashion more than a decade ago is now at the heart of our post modern aesthetic. Blending of cultural traditions is now commonplace in all realms of art and fashion is no exception to this. In my styling I tried to emulate some of the recurring motifs of the collection like the golden shoes and the variation of fabric draping, mixing loosely fitted pieces with very tailored cut ones. The lack of any identifying features of the models in our inspiration is something we were advised to ignore and were asked to show our faces. I decided to add more than hair on top of my head to add a little punk and panache to the outfit, highlighting an attitude that, to me, is at the core of this collection and that is fun and playfulness.

Eleseren Brianna “Eles”

COC 1st Challenge - Maison Martin Inspiration - Eleseren Brianna

I loved the crazy but oh so clever mix of patterns and colours in this collection, and the adventurous mixing of boho with avante garde. The shapes are strong and deconstructed, and the use of colours in the fabric mixes and tattoos, together with the gold and metallic foils, the fringing and the beading make for a very rich effect.

I decided to focus mainly on the boho feel and pattern interplay in this styling, together with the deconstructed feel of this Maison Martin collection designs. For me it was important to find a harmonising and rich interplay of patterns in the pieces I used. My finished styling harmonised colours within an earth/gold/olive range with brighter and more vivid highlights of peacock blue. I suggested the fringing around the face by using Indian and gypsy styled jewellery pieces, which also worked with the boho feeling running through the Maison Martin collection. Separated sleeves and an asymmetric/tied styling to the pieces was inspired by the avante/deconsructed feel which is also in the collection. Finally I brought hints of gold into my makeup, to work with the gold tones and metallic gold ankle boots in the overall styling

Flidais Etchegaray “Fly”

Colour of Couture Photo Challenge #1

Inspired by the Maison Martin Margiela – Haute Couture spring 2014 “Artisanal” collection. This inventive collection literally looked like a “collection” of scraps of different luxurious textiles, jewels, and tapestries all pieced together in Margiela’s unique creations. I was inspired by a particular jacket in the collection which appeared to be made out of none other than foil. This top from .Shi, with it’s asymmetric cut and belted waist, was just the design I was looking for. The pants from Solidea Folies, came close to a pair worn with a particular Margiela design which exuded an almost gypsy/ circus like flair. I wanted to give my styling an almost industrial edge, so kept the colors metallic down to the chunky jewelery by Amorous. To add a splash of color, and as a nod to the full masks worn by the models in Margiela’s runway show, I accented my styling with Solidea Folies “Conceptual” half mask in red. Kestrel Sorrowsong “Kes”

Inspiration – Maison Martin Margiela’s Artisanal Haute Couture, Spring-Summer 2014

Deconstruction is a term that is broadly used to describe a rebellion against traditional art forms. In fashion, the use of stylistic elements such as vintage and found materials, raw edges, revealed linings, and exposed seams on works that seem to be unfinished, recycled, or coming apart are signifiers of the deconstructed look. Deconstruction is a key element in Martin Margiela’s work. Margiela uses this technique to focus attention away from the designer as fashion icon and back onto the construction techniques and designs of the fashions themselves. I based my styling for this challenge on elements from three designs from Margiela’s Spring-Summer 2014 Artisanal Collection.

I chose Vero Modero’s Roman Top to bring an element of Passage #3: Robe Bustier into my look. Vero’s Roman Skirt in Glitter Beads reminds me of the materials Margiela used for the silvery jacket seen in Passage # 13: Ensemble. It also maintains the pencil skirt lines of the skirt in Passage #3. I added LaGyo’s Leather Shoulder Wrap because it reminded me of the vintage lap blanket used as a drape or scarf in Passage #18: Robe Du Soir. To finish the look, I added ASS’s Drama Shadow, BSD’s Surreal shoes, and constructed a tie belt from pieces of LD Major’s and League’s outfits. The eye shadow acknowledges Margiela’s use of masks on his models. The shoes acknowledge both the gold footwear he used in this body of work and Margiela’s use of scavenged and found materials. The tie belt reflects his use of string/ribbon belts, a subtle element in this collection that gives the garments the appearance of having been made from repurposed materials whose construction is fragile and that they might easily come apart.

Picture for the photo challenge for the Colour of Couture competition-sarahelisebeth Brenham. Picture done by CKDexteter Howley

The theme of this challenge was to create a look that was funky and inspirational.

The main element that i choose to center this outfit around butterflies. These insects are one of the symbols of love and joy. Butterflies also bring a message, but just for me. It’s my belief that my maternal grandmother sends a butterfly to remind me that she’s always with me, even-though she’s in another realm.

The baggy pants and bright bright colors of the blazer, headpiece and shoes, gives this look an edgy feel.

Here is a list of everything that was used to create this outfit:

Skin: LAQ: Elena in Nougat

Eyes: Amacci: Emerald Eyes – 9

Eyelashes: Lelutka: MM-Catwalk Eyelashes

Nails: Pixel Mode: *[PM] Sculpted Nail V2 – Platinum Edition V2 : Gloss

Silly Avro “Prisilla”

Colour of Couture ~ 1st Photo Challenge ~ Prisilla S. Avro (far)

Inspired by the “inventive, creative and quirky” Maison Martin Margiela Paris Haute Couture Spring Collection 2014. Margiela’s collection was quite a treat for the eye in all of its contradictions. I spent quite a while looking at the photographs of this collection, as well as the live runway video of it, and did my best to absorb the bold quirkiness of it all. I was immediately attracted by the tattoo top and knew it had to be in my recreation. The over sized jacket was quite the curiosity as well so a quirky coat by .SHI appeared in my rendition. The masks on the models were intriguing, and while we were not to obscure our faces, I had to bring in a bit of the mask effect with the piece from LaGyo. On the whole I found the collection daring and I attempted to bring that factor into my look with wearing the tattoos from Identity. There were also several short dresses in the collection, and I chose to represent that with these sexy lil tweed shorts from Marshmallows. On the whole I enjoyed the challenge and the creative license it allowed me.

Solde Rothmanay “Solde”

INSPIRATION:
When I first looked at the provided link, I thought of Carnivale, or something along the line of Mardi Gras. On a deeper level I broke it down further to the use of geometric designs, popping colors and combining different artistic elements.

I decided to use the corset all because of the fabric texture. The face on the front is what I wanted to focus on because it reminded me of the Queen of Hearts from a story that I read. From that texture, I included the popping red and blues, adding the geometric element with the striped pants. The skirt was my own addition just to give it a touch of femininity.

Tiviyah “Tivi”

Colour of Coutre Style Challenge #1 - Tiviyah

Style Challenge #1: Designer Inspiration (Maison Martin Margiela)
http://www.arcstreet.com/article-maison-martin-margiela-paris-ha…

I definitely got a Boho feel out of a lot of the patterns that were used and some of the silhouettes… but one of the things the website said that really stuck out to me as unique about this collection was that it was meant to explore the mind of a ‘collector’… so I focused on things that individuals might collect. Some collect flowers and press them in books, others collect coins (my bracelets are made of coins), and others collect clocks/watches/pocket watches. So, draped from the gown are small pocketwatches meant to look like they are hung from the ruffles.

I have to thank the amazing Ashia Denimore for this photo!

Zionp “Zion”

Inspired by the Maison Martin Margiela Paris Haute Couture Spring Collection 2014.
The styling is inspired from my favourite look which consisted of a top that looked like a body tattoo, but it is also based on the overall feel of the collection. The collection was so creative, I loved the the emphasis on fabric and the way the fabric was draped and I particularly loved the prints and mixture of different prints together .

Zoomy Bluebird “Zoomy”

COC Photo Challenge #1

Stripes with flowers. Gold metal twill alongside jewels and trinkets. Silk satin, mirrors, stones, ceramic, glass tube beads….all of this and more makes up Maison Martin Mariela’s latest called, “Artisanal.”

In this Haute Couture Spring 2014 Collection, Maison is a natural at combining different patterned fabrics giving them complete symmetry. It is not an easy task and for that he has my true admiration.

Inspired, I gave it a go by pairing a bold printed overcoat with glitter striped pants and a flowered bodysuit. I loved the look of his Embroidered “Clin d’oeil” Evening Gloves (which took 18 hours to make, by the way), but wasn’t satisfied with how anything with similar style transferred over inworld. So, I simulated the look with my own hair — Bushy and stringy without all the fuss. Lastly, I adorned my feet with gold ankle boots and with a touch of “Zoom Zoom” I wrapped a bold orange scarf around my neck bringing out that same color in the coat.

Maison Martin is a great way to begin Colour of Couture and I, for one, cannot wait until the next challenge!
